When is the state minimum wage in

New Hampshire going up? Do I need new posters?

I’m so glad you asked that question! The minimum wage for the state of New Hampshire will increase on September 1, 2007. Currently the rate is $5.85 per hour. However, on the first day of September, that rate will increase by 65 cents to $6.50 per hour.

Yes, that means you will need new state minimum wage posters, as well.

Under the state minimum wage law, technically known as RSA 279, employees in household labor such as au pairs or nannies, and those in domestic labor(such as housekeepers, are exempt from the state minimum wage. In addition, farm laborers, outside sales reps are exempt from the minimum wage. In the simplest terms, employees in these jobs can legally be paid less than the state minimum wage.

The New Hampshire state law exempts workers in several other industries from the state minimum wage. These include people who work for summer camps, as long as the campers are under the age of 18. Newspaper carriers, golf caddies and non-professional members of the ski patrol are also exempt under state minimum wage law.

For employers in the Granite State, this is the second increase in less than 6 weeks… and there are more wage increases on the way. That’s because by state law, if the

New Hampshire minimum wage is less than the federal rate, the state minimum wage increases when the federal rate does. So, on July 24, 2008, the

New Hampshire minimum wage will increase by 5 cents per hour, to $6.55 per hour, as the federal minimum wage goes up. Then, on September 1, 2008, an additional increase to the state rate that is already approved will go into affect. On that date, the

New Hampshire minimum wage will increase by 70 cents per hour to $7.25 per hour.

Each of these changes will require every employer in the state to display a new compliance poster.
