Hi. I have been reading on your blog about all of the labor law requirements by state. Can you please tell me about the labor law notification requirements that I need to know for Iowa?
Sure. The labor law notification requirements are generally the same across each state in the U.S. However, the major differences in the labor law notification requirements come at a state level; each state requires that the employers within that state post information about different labor laws.
In generally, every employer in the U.S. should post both federal and applicable state labor law notifications that pertain to its business. There will be occasions when there is a labor law that does not pertain to a particular business. For example, if your business is too small to qualify for coverage under the Family and Medical Leave Act, then you are not legally required to post information about the Family and Medical Leave Act. However, as long as your business does qualify for certain notification requirements, you must post information about those labor laws.
In terms of the practicalities of the labor law notification postings, you will need to display both the federal and the state labor law notifications for Iowa. These notifications can be combined on the same poster, or they can be split into the different posters. You also need to be sure that the labor law posters are displayed in an area of the workplace that is clearly visible to all employees, such as an employee break room.
In terms of updates to the labor law posters, any time there has been a change to a federal or a state labor law, you will need to update your labor law posters to reflect that change. For example, because the federal minimum wage increased in 2007, you will need to update your 2007 labor law poster in order to be sure that you have the most recent and accurate information.
Here are the Iowa labor law notifications that you are required to post in your workplace:
- Minimum Wage Law
- OSHA – Health and Safety Health Protection
- Discrimination Notice
- Unemployment Insurance
- Workers’ Insurance
And here are the federal labor laws that you will need to post:
- The new 2007 Federal Minimum Wage
- USERRA - Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act
- Equal Employment Opportunity is the Law
- Employee Polygraph Protection Act
- OSHA – Job Safety and Health Protection
- IRS Withholding Notice
- Payday Notice
- Anti-Discrimination Notice CB
