California Breakroom

Are there breakroom requirments regarding the size and/or amenities for offices in California? I’m wondering if a breakroom must have any amenities in California such as a refrigerator, etc.

Wouldn’t it be great for employees if every company offered perks like Google does, including:

– Haircuts

– Free Food

– Massages

– Oil Changes

– Video & Pinball Games

It’s amenities like this that make Google one of Fortune Magazine’s Top 100 Companies to Work For.

Unfortunately, that’s not a legal requirement in California, yet.

Here’s the CA state website that discusses meal breaks and break rooms.

The employer must provide a suitable place for the worker to eat, if workers are not permitted to leave the premises. A sink with soap and water must be provided.

The “suitable place” for meals must include provisions to buy or to heat food & drinks. But, there is no requirement that the employer furnish a refrigerator.
