Is it required by law for employers to give their employees a meal break?

This is a matter of state law. There is no federal law that requires employers to give breaks to workers over the age of 18.

The states that require meal breaks for workers are: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Washington and West Virginia.

Each state law is different, and in many cases there are exceptions.

Federal law does require breaks for younger workers – as do a number of additional states.

Please post a question mentioning your state for a more specific answer.
