I am a nurse in NJ, and yesterday I went to a Long Term Care Facility to seek a position on staff. When I had asked the ADON (Assistant Director of Nursing) if there was anything open, I was told “You are a male, but you can leave an application.” Seems to me that she has no intention of even reviewing it.

This sounds like flagrant discrimination based on sex. It’s illegal for an employer to refuse to hire male nurses, just as it’s illegal for an employer to refuse to hire female construction workers.

You may be interested in this article, where a Dallas restaurant chain recently paid $1 million to settle an EEOC suit. The employer apparently discriminated against men by hiring only female bartenders. The EEOC reports that claims of sex discrimination against men are on the rise.

The EEOC or Equal Employment Opportunity Commission enforces Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on sex.
