Does the State of New Jersey have Long Term Disability Insurance as well as Short Term Disability Insurance? Would it be wise to pick up private Long Term Disability Insurance if your company does not provide it for you free of charge?

New Jersey does not offer a long term disability insurance program.  At the federal level, the Social Security Administration does provide long-term benefits for people who are disabled for 5 months or more. However, the amount of the payments is low.

Long-term disability coverage is an excellent option for any employee. It often costs just a few dollars per week, and can provide peace of mind. For that matter, short-term disability insurance is also wise. Even in states where there is short-term coverage, the payments may be just 50% of the worker’s usual income.

Financial planners also suggest that everyone have sufficient savings to live on for 6 months. Some of the most heart-wrenching questions we get are from people who have little or no income, no money and are unable to work.
