Can a employer be obligated to pay vacation time?

In some cases, yes. A number of states have laws that employers must make good on any promises to employees, including policies in employee handbooks. In other states, employees can take the employer to court to force the employer to follow through. So if an employer has promised vacation to a worker, the employee may be able to collect. A few states including California and Illinois require all employers to pay workers for unused vacation time at termination. In those states, the employer’s policy is irrelevant – employees are entitled to the payment by law.  For more specific information, post a question that mentions the name of your state.
