Is it possible to receive unemployment compensation after receiving social security disability benefits for 3 years and continue receiving these benefits. Six months ago my employer finally acknowledged that I am no longer an employee (due to settling of a Federal ADA case I filed against them) and I am now hoping to try to return to work thru vocational rehabilitation. I worked for my employer for 4 years before being disabled.

For a ruling on your specific case, contact the Illinois Department of Employment Security — or simply apply for unemployment benefits. Be sure you are honest and tell them that you are collecting Social Security disability benefits — otherwise, you are committing fraud. Unemployment benefits are for people who are able to work, and available to work. Disability benefits are for those who are unable to work. So usually, the same person doesn’t qualify for both, at the same time. However, there could be a situation that was an exception.
