Hours between shifts
How many hours off between shifts is required for an employee in the state of Illinois? Example: Monday 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday 7:00 a.m - 3:00 p.m. for fulltime & parttime
I look forward to your reply.
Neither Illinois nor federal law addresses this issue. In theory, an employer could schedule a worker for 4 pm to 12 midnight on Monday, to return to work one hour later at 1 am on Tuesday. In practice, most employers try to avoid giving workers less than 8 to 10 hours between shifts — but at times it may be unavoidable. It’s possible that the supervisor doesn’t realize that he or she is scheduling the employee this way and will change the schedule if it’s pointed out. (Illinois law does require that each employee be off one day per calendar week, unless the employee volunteers to work 7 days.) Federal regulations specify rest periods for a few occupations, such as long-haul truck drivers.
