Raises and Promises in Writing

If a company states something in the offer letter, such as a raise after a certain period of time, are they legally bound to honor that agreement in Georgia?
In some states, the state Department of Labor will enforce written promises that an employer makes to an employee. However, that is not true in Georgia. In this case, the employee would likely have to hire a lawyer and file a lawsuit against the employer, to try to get the salary increase. Even in that case, it\’s not certain that the employee would win. Most savvy employers would write that clause so that the offer of an increase is qualified. For example, it may say that if the employee\’s performance is good, he or she will receive the increase. Smart companies will leave themselves some wiggle room, so that if market conditions change, they are not locked into salary increases. Smart employees know this, and they only look at the salary they are being offered today…not promises of raises in the future.
