Overtime

Can an employer make an employee work past their scheduled time day after day?

Yes. In almost every state and almost every occupation, employers can make almost any amount of overtime mandatory. In some states, an employer could legally require an employee to work 20 or more hours, day after day.

There are a very few exceptions to this rule. In several states, Registered Nurses cannot be required to work overtime if they are so exhausted that, in the nurses judgement, it is a danger to patient health. In Florida someone who does manual labor cannot be required to work more than 8 hours per day. A few states limit mandatory hours worked to 70 or 80 hours per week. But in 90% of U.S. states, the employer can require that employees work any number of hours. Under federal law, and overtime law in many states, employees are entitled to overtime at 1.5 times their usual rate when they work more than 40 hours per week.
