I have just read your article from January, 2007. We are a small company of 3 partners, 2 full-time employees and one part-time. We have one of the two full-time employees due to give birth in September, 2009.
It seems the bulk of your article applies directly to our situation. But, I would like to know if there have been any changes in the laws since your article was written.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Alan M. C.
Forgive us. We published hundreds of articles in January 2007, so we have no idea which one you are referring to.
However, it sounds like you are interested in FMLA. the federal Family and Medical Leave Act. Much has changed in FMLA since 2007. In January 2009, the US Department of Labor introduced new FMLA regulations. However, FMLA still applies to companies with 50 or more employees within 75 miles — in other words, FMLA does not apply to a small firm like yours.
Various states have family leave laws, so it would be wise to post another question about maternity leave in your state. And of course, if we have misunderstood your question, please post another one. We are alway happy to answer.
