bereavement policy
I have an employee that has had a death in the family and was inquiring regarding a standard bereavement office policy.
A standard policy would be to give the worker up to 3 days of unpaid bereavement leave for the death of a spouse, child, grandchild, sibling, parent or guardian, and mother- or father-in-law. Some employers would include grandparents, aunts or uncles and nieces or nephews in the leave, as well. Usually employees can use any accrued PTO or paid vacation for additional time off, if necessary. Some employers allow employees to use accrued sick leave, as well.
There is no law that any employer must give bereavement leave, but it is the right thing to do, and most employers offer this benefit. The employer should establish a policy (preferably in writing) and enforce it consistently. In some states, this situation would be covered by state family leave law. lllness of an immediate family member is covered under FMLA, however, death of an extended family member is not.
