I-9 & supporting documents

I understand that employee I-9 forms should be maintained in a separate file and location. Should this file also include the copies of supporting documentation?

If the company chooses to keep copies of I-9 supporting documents, then yes, they should be kept with the I-9s in a file separate from the personnel files. The problem is that the supporting documents indicate an employees race, citizenship status, national ancestry, age, sex and may indicate the employee color. None of these factors can be considered when making employment decisions. Keeping this information out of the personnel files is a basic step in defening against any lawsuit for illegal discrimination.
