Can the employer change the policy on holiday pay at any time?

Heres the situation: I am in HR for a mid-sized company. Our policy on holiday pay for several years has been that employees get paid for Thanksgiving and the day after Thanksgiving if a) they work the scheduled day before and after the holiday and 2) they have been employed for 90 days or more.

Now, the president of the company changed that policy, just one week before Thanksgiving, to have the day after Thanksgiving be a regular scheduled work day. Is this even legal?

In most states this change is lawful, as long as the employees are informed in advance. However, we will note that it is likely to create a great deal of ill-will among employees. It would have been better for the president to come up with a different strategy for saving money this year.

A few states have laws that require a two-week minimum notice if benefits are changed. In those states, this change would be unlawful.
