cigar bars/hookah lounges and food establishments

i own a restaurant that serves food, cigar and hookahs,
what does that mean for my business with the new michigan smoking ban. but the ban has the exeption for cigar bars and specialty shops, does that mean i can not serve food any more?

Yes, that is exactly what it means. The Michigan Smoking Ban was passed on December 10, 2009 and goes into effect on May 1, 2010. It prohibits indoor smoking in all public places, and all workplaces. However, there is an exception for cigar stores, and for hookahs that serve no food or beverages. Those establishments can continue to allow smoking indoors.

If you continue to serve food or beverages, you are operating a restaurant under the law, and no smoking is permitted in restaurants. Smoking is also prohibited on restaurant patios.

One Response to “cigar bars/hookah lounges and food establishments”

  1. Mike Says:

This answer is not complelely accurate. If the restaurant owner sells enough cigars (10% of revenue) and has or installs an on-site humidor with rental space before April 1, he could operate as a “cigar bar.”

Cigar bars are allowed to sell food and alcohol as long as they meet the cigar sales threshold.
