Termination at Time of Notice

We have an employee who has given a 1 month notice for leaving the company. Today the President decided that it was best for her to leave the position so as not to have any negative impact. Since we are an at will state are we required to pay her for her remaining time?

You are not required to pay this employee for the days that she does not work. If she works only one week of her four weeks notice, you can pay her for only one week.

However, be aware that in some states, when you do this, the employee is entitled to unemployment benefits, at least for the three weeks of her notice period. This is because under these circumstances, the employee has not quit — you have fired her.
