Policy regarding downloading image to workplace personal computer

What is the policy on downloading picture images onto a workplace personal computer?

This is a matter of company policy, not employment law. However, in a recent survey by SHRM, the Society for Human Resource Management, 88 percent of employees realized that using their work computer to upload or download photos was wrong, while 60 percent thought it was okay to use a work computer to check personal email.

As an employer you should have a policy in place that company computers are to be used only for company business. You may want to make an exception for personal email, or for limited use of a company laptop, especially by an employee who travels. However, using the work computer for personal photos is totally inappropriate. For one thing, photos eat up a lot of storage space on the hard drive. Obviously you will make an exception for job-related photos.

Every employer should also have strict policies against using work computers to access porn or gambling sites. For one thing, these activities are a huge waste of work time. In addition, if another employee is even briefly exposed to such images in the workplace, that is sexual harassment. In addition, if an employee uses a work computer for child porn, the employer may be liable.
