Workers Comp

We are in the state of Wisconsin. If an employee is out on Workers Compensation or STD and receives a return to work slip from their doctor which releases the employee with no restrictions, can the employer require they pass a return to work physical prior to their return?

There are varying resources that have differing opinions on this subject and no clear-cut answers.  The majority of the information out there does not say it is outside of the employer’s rights to require an additional physical to return to work for employees out on workers compensation or short-term disability as long as the employer foots the bill.
