Can I have an exempt employee have a set schedule of office hours.
For example 8:30- 5:30 Monday through Friday

Yes, this is very common and completely legitimate. As the employer, you can require that an exempt employee work a defined schedule. You can even discipline or terminate the exempt employee who does not meet this simple performance expectation. If the exempt employee works a partial day, such as going home at 1 pm, you must still pay her salary for the entire day. However, you can discipline or terminate her for not meeting performance standards.

The majority of companies have a schedule that they expect exempt employees to adhere to. Exempt employees may be called upon to work more hours, but they cannot work fewer.
