If I am on paid time off (40 hrs vacation) Mon-Fri and agree to provide 8 hrs shift coverage on Saturday, in addition to my 40 vacation hours, should the extra 8 hrs be paid at overtime or straight time?

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) only requires overtime to be paid for hours worked in excess of forty in one week. Since vacation time is not time worked, your employer is not legally required to pay overtime if you choose to work one day that week.

Some employers do have a policy that vacation (or holiday) time counts towards overtime, so review your employee handbook to see if your company has such a policy in place.
