employees coming to ask for PTO payout for emergencies

Is there some discretion as to paying out someones accrued PTO because of some family emergencies?

PTO time off gives employees the flexibility to use time off for reasons the employee see fit. Employees are usually accountable and responsible for managing their own PTO hours for illness, vacations, appointments, emergencies and other needs that require paid time off.

PTO plans or policies usually state that PTO must be scheduled in advance for vacations, personal leave appointments or other reasons. Some plans require supervisor approval and possible scheduling for department coverage. Unscheduled absences for sick or emergencies are usually monitored and may require a doctor note.

It is a companies decision what discretion is allowed in order to pay accrued PTO time off. However, some guidelines should be applied.
