Medical Release for return to work

As the employer am I allowed to (or am I required to) demand an employee who has been absent on a short term disability claim to provide documentation from a qualified physician releasing them to return to work?

Under FMLA regulations, an employer can have a policy or practice that requires employees who take a leave to provide documentation from their physician in order to return to work.

You can generally have a policy or practice for regular sick time off as well. For example, you can require an employee who is off work due to sickness for three consecutive days, to provide a return to work note from their physician.
