Open Positions

Should recruiters post all open positions externally. Or can recruiters recruit internally first before posting externally?

Only federal contractors are obligated to post jobs under the Vietnam Era Veterans’ Readjustment Assistant Act. In addition employers who have collective bargaining agreements may have job posting procedures.

Employers who are not federal contractors or who do not have a union are not obligated to post jobs internally. Typically they will develop a posting policy or procedure, which should be followed consistently. It is a good practice to post jobs internally. Most employees will view the practice as positive, as long as the practice is followed fairly. Employees will feel that promotion from within is a security factor and will also serve as a retention tool.

Companies can benefit as well from posting internally, it can reduce recruitment cost and talent within the company can be recognized. It is also faster to recruit internally. Some companies will only post jobs from a supervisor down and will recruit for higher level positions within the company.  Again a company should develop a recruitment policy and follow it.
