Policy against Leaving Work Early

Is there a sample policy or memo that I can use to guide me in creating one for my organization? We have a recent barrage of employees who feel they can leave the workplace early without notifying supervisors or anyone else.

Time and attendance are common workplace issues. Some employers may look the other way when employees leave early if the employee is meeting performance standards and physical presence is not necessarily needed to perform the job. However, when such behavior is done sneakily or becomes the norm, it’s important to establish rules for leaving early and the consequences for violating them.

The Society for Human Resource Management provides a great sample Time and Attendance Policy, http://www.shrm.org/templatestools/samples/policies/pages/cms_006834.aspx.

Make sure your policy is clearly written and easily understood. Once the policy is written make sure to provide it to staff. Depending upon the size of the company you may consider discussing the new policy at a staff meeting. Lastly, remember to follow through on the consequences.
