Salaried Employee Start Date for Benefit Purposes

We have hired a new employee that is starting work Monday, August 1. We would like to put them into our system that they started July 31 so they are able to receive benefits a month earlier. Our pay period runs July 23-August 5 and weeks run Saturday – Friday. Is there any issue with starting an employee on a Sunday (even if they aren’t working)? Thanks!

Even considering this is very generous of you. Kudos! The only issue that comes to mind would be with your benefits contract. Though uncommon, some contracts specifically state the employee must be actually working to be eligible for benefits. Many contracts simply allow the employer to determine the parameters of the start date. So, just make sure you understand the wording of your contract.
