2017 Christmas Observance

Our company observes both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. For 2016, because the holidays fall on Sat & Sun, employees had Friday & Monday as the observed days. We are developing our calendar in preparation for the next year, in which Christmas Eve falls on Sunday and Christmas Day falls on Monday. In this instance, would you just give employees Monday off?

It’s very generous of you to give employees the Friday and Monday off in observance of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Many employers are only giving the Monday off, but many employers don’t observe Christmas Eve.

Since Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday next year it would be acceptable to only give employees the Tuesday after Christmas off. This way, employees still have one day off before and after the recognized holidays.
